Multiple Domain Names
POINTING TO THE SAME WEBSITE?
You may have done this because you changed your domain
name or maybe you purchased multiple domain names but really only
have one site.
Little did you know that the search engines do not
look kindly on multiple domain names pointing to the same website.
It could be detrimental to your internet marketing campaign, affecting
ranking and heaven forbid, your link popularity. Some have tried
using html or java script redirects, but the search engines are
not favorable to those either.
So how do we accomplish our marketing objectives with
multiple domain names and one website, and still appease the search
engines?
Basically, it is called a 301 action
for permanent redirects. It is done at the server level, so you
will need to work with your webmaster and host to implement it.
What is best, is that all of your link popularity is supposed
to forward to the main site. In this day and age of link popularity
becoming more and more important, that is a plus. Besides your
visitors being happy to have gotten to the right place, the search
engines will be happy and your competition will not report you
for spamming!
How could something so important be so little known?!
I have been trying to find an answer to this problem for a year
now and recently heard the answer directly from a Google representative
at a Search Engine Strategies conference in San Jose.
I was also fortunate to be in a position to spend
some time at Search Engine Strategies with Bruce Clay, a noted
expert in the internet industry and well known speaker. For more
information on this and other server
and design issues, please visit his website at Bruce
Clay, LLC.
